1 Purpose and nature

Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals (ABN 88 154 670 023) (Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals, we, us or our) recognises the importance of your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals intends to collect, store, use, disclose, protect and otherwise handle your personal information having regard to the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act).

This Privacy Policy does not constitute a contractual representation, promise, guarantee or warranty by Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals to you as to the manner in which Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals will or may collect, store, use, disclose, protect or otherwise handle your personal information.

4 What personal information does Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals collect?

Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals collects a variety of personal information to enable us to tailor our products and services to meet your personal needs. This includes, but is not limited to:

  2. dates of birth and death;

We collect personal information by various means including when clients complete an application, enter into an agreement with us, contact us by phone or email, send us a letter, visit one of our websites or visit in person. Personal information can also be collected via cameras installed in our venues, at gravesite funerals, or in a chapel we may use or via recordings when a client contacts us.

Whilst the choice of how much personal information is disclosed to us is left completely up to the client and, from time to time, clients may be able to deal with us anonymously or by pseudonym, if clients do not provide us with certain personal information we may not be able to provide clients with the services and products that they seek.

The personal information collected by the Company may include sensitive information, which is defined in the Privacy Act as information or an opinion about such things as an individual’s racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, membership of a political association, religious or philosophical beliefs, membership of a trade union or other professional body, criminal record or health information.

5  How does Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals collect your personal information?

All personal information we no longer require will be destroyed or permanently de-identified, however, information will be retained for as long as the law requires.

The Company will not disclose your personal information to third parties who are overseas. However, we may disclose personal information to your family members that are located overseas if required to provide our services to you or as requested by you.

We may also store your information in cloud or use storage providers that are networked or use electronic storage. As electronic or networked storage can be accessed from various countries via an internet connection, it may be accessible overseas.

While Bet Olam Jewish Funerals do not share information other than with those assisting the funeral and notifying the Birth Death and Marriage department, we have in the past shared information with the Australian Jewish Historical Society who have been collecting and collating such information from the very first fleet to now.

If you do not wish the information to be shared with the AJHS then please let your funeral director know and tick the appropriate box in the questionnaire.

Bet Olam Jewish Funerals also shares the death notice with the PJV congregations and interested parties.

Third Party Links

Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals’ website may contain certain links to other websites. We will not share your personal information with those websites and we are not responsible for the privacy practices applying in respect of those websites.

9 Change of control

If Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals sells, assigns or otherwise transfers part or the whole of its business, your personal information, which was collected by us through any of the means outlined in Clause 5, may be among the items transferred or sold to the extent that it is relevant to our business.

10 How you may access or correct your personal information

Reasonable steps will be taken to ensure the personal information we collect, use or disclose is relevant, accurate, complete and up to date. We will respond to the request within a reasonable period after the request is made. There is no charge to make a request, however we may charge a reasonable fee to cover the administrative costs of retrieving your personal information.

In certain circumstances, we may refuse, or be unable, to correct or provide you with access to your personal information. In these circumstances, we will write to you to explain the reasons why this is the case.
